What are the top safety hazards on a construction site?

Working on a construction site, day in and day out, can be an enjoyable experience. There is no better feeling than watching your hard work build something that will help others and endure for years.

Unfortunately, construction sites can be dangerous at times. If you aren't careful with what you're doing, you could find yourself dealing with an injury that could change your life.

Here are some of the top causes of construction site accidents:

  • Falls. This accident comes in many different forms. For example, you could slip and fall as the result of debris on the ground. Or maybe you slip and fall at height, such as when working on a roof, scaffolding or ladder.
  • Falling objects. This is exactly what it sounds like: an object, such as a power tool, falls from above, such as from a roof, and strikes a person standing below.
  • Equipment accidents. Most construction sites are full of heavy equipment. From bulldozers to saws and everything in between, equipment is used to make the job easier. Unfortunately, it can also cause a serious injury or even death in the result of improper use.
  • Explosions. While not common, explosions can happen at a construction site. This can be the result of something as simple as exposed wiring or improper use of a flammable chemical.
  • Repetitive motion injury. Not all construction injuries are instant. Repetitive motion injuries, for example, set in over the course of several months or years.

These are among the most common safety hazards on a construction site, but others could come into play. As a construction worker, you want to do whatever you can to protect yourself against injury.

If you do suffer an on the job injury, stop what you're doing and wait for help to arrive. Also, report the accident and your injuries to your supervisor. You want to be clear in regard to the circumstances regarding the accident.

Once the dust settles, you can then learn more about your legal rights, such as filing a workers' compensation claim.
